Valley Park School District Early Childhood Education

The early years of a child’s life shape so much more than many people realize. From birth through age five, a child’s brain is developing at an incredible pace, forming connections based on every conversation, every story and every shared moment of play. Early childhood education takes advantage of that window of growth, giving children the experiences and relationships that help build a strong foundation for everything that follows.

Before children ever step into kindergarten, they are already learning how to communicate and solve problems. High-quality early childhood programs support the growth of those skills through meaningful experiences. Through play, exploration, music, hands-on learning and guided interaction, children develop language, confidence, and curiosity. They are not just learning letters and numbers. They are learning how to think, how to ask questions and how to work through challenges.

Social and emotional growth is just as important as academic development. In early childhood classrooms, students practice sharing, taking turns, resolving conflicts and building friendships. These moments might seem small, but they are important milestones. Learning how to cooperate with others and regulate emotions lays the groundwork for success in school and beyond. A child who can manage frustration and communicate clearly is far more prepared to handle the challenges of school.

Research continues to show that students who participate in strong early childhood programs are more likely to read on grade level, perform well academically and graduate prepared for future opportunities. The goal is not to rush childhood, but to create an environment where children feel safe, supported and excited to learn. When students enter kindergarten with strong language skills, confidence and positive social habits, they are ready to thrive instead of trying to catch up.

Jill Elder, preschool teacher at the Valley Park Early Childhood Center, sees that impact every day. She shares, “Early childhood education is one of the most important investments we can make in our kids. During these critical early years, children develop the cognitive, social, and emotional foundations that shape lifelong learning and success. High-quality preschool programs build essential skills such as problem solving, communication, self-regulation, and critical thinking which lead to stronger academic performance and greater success in the workforce. Preschool also nurtures empathy, cooperation, and building healthy relationships. Children learn to share, resolve conflicts, and work with others. By supporting both intellectual and social-emotional growth, early childhood education lays the foundation for long-term success in school, work, and life. It is truly a privilege to teach preschool at the Valley Park Early Childhood Center. The community and family support here is like nowhere else. I love our families and students and enjoy the unique opportunity our small district offers to follow my students long after they finish their time in preschool.”

Strong early childhood programs also strengthen families. They create partnerships between educators and parents, offer guidance during important developmental years and provide early support when students need additional help. When families feel connected and informed, children benefit in meaningful ways.

Kindergarten readiness is not simply about recognizing letters or counting to 20. It is about walking into school feeling confident, capable and ready to learn. Early childhood education gives children that start. By investing in these early years, we are investing in stronger students, stronger families and a stronger future.
