Something special happens every week when Mrs. Newton’s 7th-grade Hawk Time students head to Valley Park Elementary to visit Ms. Grittini’s 2nd graders. Together, they’ve launched a one-on-one fluency partnership that’s bringing smiles, confidence and measurable growth to both grade levels.
Each 7th grader serves as a “fluency interventionist,” helping their 2nd-grade buddy build skills in phonics, decoding and expression. What started as a simple reading activity has quickly grown into a highlight of the week for both groups. The younger students get personalized support and encouragement in reading fluency, while the older students gain leadership experience and a meaningful sense of purpose.
“Seeing my buddy is the best part of my week!” one student shared. This feeling was echoed by nearly everyone involved.
This partnership is possible because of one of Valley Park’s greatest strengths, our One Campus community. Having all grade levels within walking distance allows for authentic collaboration and connection between older and younger students. And thanks to Prop B, the renovated learning pod spaces give classes the perfect environment to work together comfortably and creatively.
The result is a program that strengthens literacy through individualized learning, builds relationships that foster belonging and gives students real-world opportunities to lead and serve. It’s a win for both readers and role models and a beautiful example of Limitless Learning in action.
