From exploring the Thornhill Estate, home of Missouri’s 2nd Governor Frederick Bates, to rolling up their sleeves for hands-on activities, students experienced what life was really like in the 1800s. They made candles, churned butter (and tasted it!), sawed wood, ground corn and even washed their hands using soapwort.
This trip connected directly to what students have been learning in class, Missouri history and historical fiction came to life right in front of them. It’s one thing to read about the past… it’s another to live it for a day.

• “I liked seeing the Bates’ house and learning about his life.” – Jane B.
• “Making candles and eating the butter was the best!” – Gael C.
