In Mrs. Rachel Schlotzhauer’s Medical Detectives classes, Valley Park Middle School students recently stepped into the role of researchers and educators as they explored the fascinating, and sometimes frightening, world of infectious diseases.

Each group was challenged to study three illnesses in depth: one bacterial, one viral, and one fungal. Using trusted resources like the CDC and the Mayo Clinic, students dug into the causes, symptoms, treatments and prevention methods for diseases ranging from strep throat and E. Coli to COVID-19, HIV, athlete’s foot and thrush.

But this project wasn’t just about gathering facts. Students had to transform their research into clear, engaging presentations designed to teach their classmates. Along the way, they practiced critical thinking by comparing how bacteria, viruses and fungi spread and affect the human body. They also honed collaboration and public speaking skills which are valuable tools for any future career, especially in healthcare and science.

Mrs. Schlotzhauer shared, “The goal wasn’t just to report facts, but to communicate medical information clearly and effectively which is an essential skill for anyone considering a career in healthcare.”

By the end of the unit, the classroom felt like a mini medical conference, with each group sharing its expertise to build a stronger understanding of the world of pathogens. Students left not only with deeper knowledge of infectious diseases but also with an appreciation for the science and teamwork needed to solve real-world medical mysteries.
