At Valley Park, learning goes far beyond textbooks and test scores, it’s in every experience that helps our students grow. One of the most inspiring examples of this is the Special Olympics, a true reflection of what we call Limitless Learning.
This annual event showcases the determination, spirit and joy of our students. As they compete, they demonstrate courage and resilience. Qualities that are the heart of learning. “Special Olympics is an event where all students can be successful!” said Nikole White, SSD Elementary School teacher. “They have opportunities to practice skills we work on in school. They build independence and confidence that encourages lifelong learning.”
The event also brings out something extraordinary in our entire school community. Students, staff and families come together to cheer, support and celebrate one another. “I love that our students are able to shine at our Special Olympics events!” shared Julie Schroeder, SSD Director. “And this year, it’s been amazing to see our full VP school community embrace the Unified Events, where our Valley Park students can act as buddies. It’s an organic way to build inclusivity and promote abilities!”
Beyond the excitement of the games, the impact on students’ growth is profound. “This event allows students to work on the variety of skills we’ve been learning all year in such a fun way,” said Danielle Fox, SSD Middle School teacher. “It gives students a chance to socialize with kids their age and be successful! It cultivates confidence and self-advocacy. We look forward to this event every year.”
For families, the event is just as meaningful. “Special Olympics gives Will an opportunity to be celebrated for who he is, and it’s a place for him to shine,” said parent Karen Clark.
Through the Special Olympics, we see students push boundaries, embrace challenges and shine in ways that go far beyond the classroom. That’s the kind of learning that lasts a lifetime—and it’s the heart of Limitless Learning at Valley Park.
