Our third graders are diving into science in their newly renovated pod, one of the many learning spaces enhanced through our recent Prop B improvements. Ms. LaBeaume and Mrs. Serage have teamed up to co-teach the unit “Guardians of the Garden.” By joining their classes as science partners, they’re blending their strengths and creativity to deliver hands-on, engaging lessons that bring science to life for every student.

Co-teaching science has allowed for more engaging, interactive lessons that spark curiosity and deepen understanding. With two teachers guiding the learning, students get more chances to explore, ask questions and make connections. “Doing science together in the pod with Ms. LaBeaume’s class is fun because we get to do it with new partners instead of the same ones from our class,” shared Paige Fredrick.

This shared approach models collaboration and question-driven learning for students while helping teachers tailor lessons to meet everyone’s needs. Cameron Helton shared, “I like doing it with Ms. LaBeaume’s class because I know we are learning the same stuff as other third graders.”

In this MySci unit, students are investigating how climate affects what types of food can be grown in different regions, comparing Valley Park’s weather patterns to other areas around the world. The partnership has opened new opportunities for students to think critically, share perspectives and build teamwork skills that real scientists use. “I like learning about regions and where food comes from,” said Vinny Hleiss. “Working with Ms. Serage’s class helps us learn to do things together and learn from each other.”

By learning side-by-side, our third graders are becoming true “Guardians of the Garden.” Co-teaching not only strengthens collaboration and engagement, it directly supports high academic achievement. With two educators leading instruction, students receive more individualized feedback, targeted support and enrichment opportunities that help every learner grow. The result is a classroom where curiosity leads to deeper understanding, confidence blossoms and every student can reach their full potential.
