Valley Park High School’s Adventure Pursuits classes aren’t your typical indoor, textbook kind of experience. They’re hands on, fresh air filled and built to help students grow in ways that stick with them long after the final bell rings. Through activities like fishing, survival skills, archery, camping and orienteering, students learn how to think on their feet, work together and stay safe in the outdoors.

Both Adventure Pursuits I and II center on understanding Missouri’s conservation rules and regulations. Students don’t just read about responsible outdoor practices, they live them out in real settings. That mix of knowledge and real experience helps build good judgment, problem solving and independence. It also lines up beautifully with the expectations schools are aiming for today by encouraging students to apply what they’re learning, communicate, collaborate and make thoughtful decisions.

Adventure Pursuits I gives students a strong foundation. They explore basic fishing techniques, survival strategies, camping skills, archery, and even competition shooting. They also earn their Hunter Safety Education Certification, which teaches responsibility and respect for both wildlife and equipment. Every student participates fully, including on field experiences that bring their learning to life. Senior Aubrey Dibble said, "Adventure Pursuits is such a fun class and we get the opportunity to learn new skills we normally wouldn't get to know in other classes!"

Adventure Pursuits II builds on that base and takes students even deeper. They try advanced fishing methods, fly fishing, geocaching, 3D archery and the safe, structured use of air rifles.

Using air rifles in a controlled, well supervised environment teaches students far more than aim and accuracy. They learn discipline, patience, safety procedures and respect for equipment. These are transferable skills that support good decision-making in all areas of life. It’s similar to learning how to drive. You want young people taught by a trained adult who emphasizes responsibility. When students practice with clear rules and expectations, they build confidence and understand how to prioritize safety for themselves and others.

Adventure Pursuits also strengthens teamwork, communication and critical thinking. When students share a campsite, map out a trail, or figure out how to stay warm with limited supplies, they’re practicing skills that schools aim to build across all grade levels. They learn how to plan ahead, stay calm under pressure and help one another succeed. Those experiences mirror the kind of real-world readiness we want for every graduate of Valley Park High School.

Teacher Zach Turner describes it best, “Adventure Pursuits gives students the chance to step outside their comfort zone, take on new challenges and walk away with skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives. Watching them grow in confidence and responsibility is the best part of the job.”

By combining outdoor education with teamwork, responsibility and hands-on learning, Adventure Pursuits prepares students for both the world they’re entering and the community they’re part of. It’s learning that feels like an adventure and builds skills that matter.
