In Mrs. Rachel Schlotzhauer’s Pre-Algebra class, learning looks a little different and that’s a great thing. Students rotate through stations where they work with classmates, practice independently, and meet in small groups with Mrs. Schlotzhauer for targeted instruction.
“Mastery-based learning has been a useful tool in my math classes. It allows students to work at their own pace and complete the activities they feel they need in order to be successful. This gives me more face to face time with each student and allows me to provide feedback that is relevant to them. It also helps both me and my students have a clear understanding of exactly where they stand with their learning and what they still need to master the learning goals,” said Mrs. Schlotzhauer.
This mastery based approach gives every student the right level of challenge and support, helping them build confidence while truly understanding the math. Whether they are collaborating, problem solving on their own or getting one on one guidance, students are actively engaged and growing every day.
Students agree that the station format makes learning more meaningful and enjoyable. “When Mrs. Schlotzhauer sets up stations around her room for test-prep, it gives us opportunities to expand our learning in ways normal notes can’t. It helps us enjoy math class a little more,” said 8th grader Elena Martinez.
Pre-algebra plays a big role in this growth because it serves as the bridge to high school math and future success. It introduces students to the language of algebra, teaches them how to think through problems instead of just finding answers and builds the confidence they need to tackle more advanced coursework. Skills learned in pre-algebra show up in real life too, from budgeting and analyzing data to understanding patterns and making everyday decisions. By building these foundations now, students are being prepared not just for their next math class, but for countless opportunities ahead.
