Supporting student literacy takes creativity, collaboration and a commitment to meeting students where they are. Innovative tools, family partnerships and thoughtfully designed spaces are helping our library expand access to reading and deepen student engagement.
One example of this enrichment is the use of Playaways, an initiative developed through collaboration between library staff and grant support from the VPES PTO. These pre-loaded, portable audiobook devices were selected with a clear goal in mind: to create an innovative reading experience that increases motivation and engagement for all learners.
As Dr. Stephen Schwartz, Elementary Reading Specialist, shared, “Literacy grows when students are given meaningful access to texts that match their interests and learning needs. Resources like Playaways allow students to engage deeply with literature, build independence, and develop positive reading habits both at school and at home.”
The integration of Playaways reflects the District’s commitment to personalized learning and student-centered classrooms. By expanding the types of reading resources available, these devices help ensure students can connect with literature in ways that best support their individual needs, interests and learning styles.
Playaways provide several key benefits for students:
Increased Engagement for All Readers
The engaging format appeals to a wide range of learners, encouraging a love of literature and increasing overall reading motivation.
Support for Independent Reading and Homework Completion
By combining audio and text, Playaways increase the likelihood that students can independently complete their recommended 20 minutes of nightly reading.
Innovative Accessibility
As portable, all-in-one devices, Playaways eliminate the need for additional equipment or internet access, making high-quality literature accessible anytime and anywhere.
In addition to technology-based supports, Valley Park Elementary also creates reading experiences that include families and the school community. Events such as Stories with Students invite family members into the school to read alongside students, strengthening the connection between home and school while reinforcing the joy of shared reading. These shared experiences help students see reading as meaningful, supported and enjoyable both in and beyond the classroom.
Recent upgrades to the library space and furnishings, made possible through Prop B, have further enhanced the library experience. Updated furniture and flexible learning areas have transformed the library into a welcoming, modern space where students are comfortable, engaged and excited to read, learn and collaborate. These improvements support varied learning styles and make the library a central hub for enrichment, connection and personalized learning.
Together, initiatives like Playaways, Stories with Students and library upgrades demonstrate the Valley Park School District’s holistic approach to literacy. This approach blends innovation, accessibility, family engagement and intentional learning spaces. By diversifying resources and creating environments designed for connection and curiosity, VPSD continues to build experiences where all students feel supported and able to do their best.
