On April 24, students from Valley Park School District traveled to Lafayette High School to compete in the Special Olympics, stepping onto the track as athletes and teammates.
For our VPSD students, this wasn’t just a day of events. It was a day to shine.
From the first race to the final cheers, our athletes showed determination and pride. Each event was a chance to challenge themselves and celebrate progress.
Julie Schroeder, VPSD Special School District Director, shared, “Special Olympics creates opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build confidence, develop social skills and experience success in ways that carry far beyond the field. Participation helps athletes grow their self-esteem, form friendships and see what they’re capable of accomplishing.”
There were smiles exchanged between teammates, encouragement from peers and a sense of pride that stayed with them long after each event ended. Special Olympics helps students develop a positive self-image and a stronger sense of belonging, while also building important life skills like communication, perseverance and independence.
Moments like this reflect what Limitless Learning is all about. It’s not always confined to a classroom. It happens when students are given opportunities to grow, to be seen and to succeed in ways that matter to them.
We are so proud of our Special Olympics athletes and all they accomplished. Congratulations!
